Cultural Walking & Boat tour “Following the steps of the Durrell’s”

Full day Cultural Walking & Boat Tour “Following the steps of the Durrell’s, getting a taste of their lifestyle on Corfu Island”

Our tour of Corfu begins at the Durrells spot at the center of Corfu.

We will stop for a while at the Town Hall square with the theatre of San Giacomo a Baroque Renaissance building of the early 18th cent.

Then we will proceed to the Esplanade square, with the most important monuments of Corfu town.

The Liston buildings are decorated with French arcades. The place is reminiscent of Rui De Rivoli in Paris.

The old Byzantine fortress of Corfu was built in the 6th cent ΑD and it was reinforced in the years of Venetian rule. The citadel of Corfu stood between the imposing rocks of the promotory and for many centuries the fortress protected Corfu from attacks.

The Bosketo garden enjoys views of the fortress and this lovely place is dedicated to the famed authors Lawrence and Gerald Durrell.

The palace of St. George and St. Michael was built in the years of the British protectorate. It is an elegant regency style building with an ionic peristyle.

The church of St. Spyridon is the most venerated church on the island. Inside the church there is a small crypt and the relic of St. Spyridon is laid within a silver gilt ebony casket.

The Campielo area is the oldest most authentic part of Corfu. We’ll pass through narrow alleys with Italianate houses, shady squares and picturesque churches.

In a short distance is situated the new fortress of Corfu. It was built in the 16th. cent, an impressive example of Italian defensive architecture. The area around the fortress is very charming with the Tenedos church, the traditional old houses and the Jewish neighborhood.

As soon as you finish viewing Corfu Town our crew will be awaiting you on board of our boat, while passing by the city of Corfu town with its remarkable pastel colored 400 year-old Venetian houses and the old fortress.

Our crew will provide their expertise regarding the Durell Family and even the spots will be shown, where they took scenes for the successful series of the Durrell’s by the producer Christopher Hall from 2016-2019.

Even from the seaside we will see the elegant Mon Repos Palace, where Queen Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip was born in 1921.

Finally we will reach the idyllic “Mouse island” and the white precious looking Greek orthodox church “Vlacherna”- both serve as landmarks of Corfu island.

We sail back and will anchor at the beautiful island “Vidos” with its untouched nature.

Afterwards we will relax on board and listen to several short stories of the Durrell’s whilst sailing along the picturesque east coast towards the North.  We will see the beautiful Venetian Villa in “Kontokali”, where they had been filming the main part of the famous Durrell series…and we will spot the idyllic Chapel of “Saint Arsenius”, the favorite bathing area of Larry & Nancy Durrell.

Last but not least…arriving at the pretty village on the coast “Kalami”, where you can have excellent lunch at the famous “White house”, where Lawrence Durrell lived with his wife Nancy in the 1930″s.

This trip, combining a walking and sailing tour is something different and will be an unforgettable experience!
